I had some extra dough, so I bought a Jayson Tatum jersey off Fanatics. And for the first time, I put on the Tatum jersey on a Friday night with my kid at a sleepover and the girls at a birthday party. I settled in to watch and bet on hoops and play a little 2K with three DFS Draftking lineups running.
Jayson Tatum answered the bell tonight, this jersey may just be good luck reserved for big games at the Garden.
After back-to-back losses against the Cavaliers, the Celtics circled the wagons to win 123-119. While they didn’t cover as seven point favorites, it was a big win.
Without question, it was Tatum’s best game of the year. It was a line that could have one arguing that it was like an MVP performance, and the fans who love him responded.
With all the positives after 8 games, and Ime Udoka on his way to Brooklyn, the Joe Mazzulla era is off to a 5-3 start. However, the Celtics are more of an offensive team and seem to have lost their defensive luster. What I expect is that Brad Stevens will get some defensive specialists (think Derrick White last year) that fit perfectly with Boston and the Celtics are better defensively by year’s end.
Still, I don’t expect this team to go back to the Finals. Too much adversity. Too many variables already different.
It looks like Tatum will finish in the top couple players for MVP voting if his play continues. His rebounding has been phenomenal. He’s still scoring, and he’s added some blocks to his game. If he ends up winning DPOY, look out. I’m enjoying the Celtics for sure and will continue to hope they get hot like they did last year.
Tomorrow night on a Saturday night, they play in Madison Square Garden in what will be a very tough game for them on a back-to-back second half.
